This Week....
What Professional Wrestling is All About!
According to KJ...
WWE had a house show in my area just recently, and of course, me and my son were there. To comment on the quality of the show, it was outstanding. Everyone showed up, worked hard, and gave the crowd their absolute moneys worth. Everyone I knew there had a great time, but I took away a couple little hidden stories that I would like to share, and I think you'll see why they're important.
First off, when we entered the floor area, it was hard to miss an even MORE hardcore fan then myself. He was painted on his face, chest and back, wild clothes that look like 60's rejects and multi colored garland hanging from his clothes. I did say hard to miss, right? He was in full Ultimate Warrior makeup, but not being bad enough, so were the two girls who were with him. Jim Helwig's fan club was well in effect. I got a couple pics of them here. They were fun to watch, if anything, before the show started.
When we found our seats, there was a little girl, maybe eight or nine, sitting with her mother. Mom obviously didn't want to be there, she looked like she had been sucking on a lemon for three days. When the lights went down, the little girl sparked right up. Screaming, yelling, jumping up and down, pounding on the seats. I LOVED it. Her mother was SO embarrassed, even told her to move down if she was going to yell. The little girl knew names, wrestling maneuvers, and everything that was going on. By the way she got into the show, I could tell it wasn't her first time. Maybe dad had to work.....
Either way, that little girl inspired me. She was a wrestling fan! Enjoying every minute the show that was put on in front of her. There was a place for her to be free, express herself any way she wanted. She was definitely a great addition the show, even if it was only for me....
Like Dusty Rhodes said in an interview YEARS ago, in a wrestling stadium you can see a black man, Mexican, asian, and every kind of race, come together and root for a mutual hero. In that auditorium, I saw every race, creed and color, all having the same experience, fun. They cheered, they booed, they popped when they saw good athleticism, they lived the wrestling experience. What they saw weekly on television came to life in front of them, and they all will take an individual memory home of the event.
Quickly, a father and son story. I encountered a father and son team who were big wrestling fans and spent most of the night scrambling around the arena, trying to get close to wrestlers. Come to find out, they had an agenda. When the Spirit Squad came out, they both blasted them with silly string, pink and yellow. It was hilarious, and the fans went absolutely nuts. Things is, they got kicked out. WWE security grabbed the son by the arm, and both were vacated from the building missing the last two matches. They didn't seem to care, if anything, they were quite happy with themselves. A father and son moment, with no real harm done, they will never forget. It worked out for them in the end, after they got outside, they went out back and got to meet a lot of the wrestlers leaving the building. Truly a night they will never forget.
ALL of this, is what I feel wrestling is about. Good, wholesome entertainment, that any age and race can enjoy. We can live vicariously through our heroes and become a part of the fantasy, if only for a few minutes. It doesn't have to be a sport, if it touches you in some way. To anyone who thinks wrestling is a waste, they need to go to a live show.
By the way, Justin, I want the cap to the silly string to put in the room......
Until the next time, remember:
